About the Project

Cloud Posture Watch is a Cloud Security Posture Management (CSPM) system designed for continuous monitoring and assessment of security configurations across cloud infrastructure. In cloud computing, 'posture' refers to the overall security state of your cloud environment — how resources are configured, what's exposed to the internet, whether encryption is enabled, if logging is active, and hundreds of other security-relevant settings. The system performs continuous checks against established security benchmarks, primarily the CIS (Center for Internet Security) Benchmarks which provide prescriptive security configuration guidelines for AWS, Azure, and GCP. Each check evaluates a specific configuration — for example, 'Is CloudTrail enabled in all regions?' or 'Are S3 buckets configured to block public access?' — and reports whether the environment passes or fails. A key feature is drift detection: the system takes periodic snapshots of your cloud configuration and alerts when changes deviate from the established secure baseline. This catches both intentional changes that weren't security-reviewed and automated changes made by infrastructure-as-code tools that might introduce misconfigurations. The monitoring dashboard, built on Grafana, provides real-time compliance scores broken down by cloud provider, region, service, and benchmark category. Historical trending shows whether the organization's security posture is improving or degrading over time. Automated alerts can be sent via Slack, email, PagerDuty, or custom webhooks, with intelligent grouping to prevent alert fatigue.

Why This Matters

Cloud environments are inherently dynamic — resources are created, modified, and destroyed constantly through automated provisioning, scaling events, and developer activity. A configuration that is secure today can become vulnerable tomorrow through a single API call or Terraform change. Without continuous monitoring, organizations are flying blind, discovering misconfigurations only after they are exploited. Research shows that the average cloud environment has over 200 misconfigurations at any given time, and the median time to detect a cloud misconfiguration without CSPM tools is 280 days. Common misconfigurations include publicly accessible storage buckets, unencrypted databases, security groups with overly permissive rules, and disabled audit logging — each representing a potential breach vector. For organizations subject to compliance frameworks (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, HIPAA, ISO 27001), continuous posture monitoring is increasingly a baseline requirement rather than a nice-to-have. This project provides enterprise-grade CSPM capabilities as an open-source solution, making continuous cloud security monitoring accessible to organizations of all sizes.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Deploy the monitoring agent in your cloud account using the provided Terraform modules or CloudFormation templates. The agent runs as a serverless function (Lambda/Cloud Function) that executes checks on a configurable schedule (default: every 6 hours). Deployment requires minimal permissions — read-only access to cloud configuration APIs.
  2. Select which compliance frameworks to monitor from the available options: CIS Benchmarks (AWS/Azure/GCP), SOC 2 Type II controls, PCI-DSS v4.0 requirements, HIPAA Security Rule, or custom organizational policies. You can enable multiple frameworks simultaneously and see a unified compliance dashboard.
  3. Configure notification channels for security alerts: Slack channels for real-time team notifications, email distribution lists for management summaries, PagerDuty for critical findings that require immediate response, and webhooks for integration with ticketing systems like Jira or ServiceNow.
  4. Access the Grafana dashboard to visualize your security posture in real time. The dashboard shows overall compliance percentage, findings by severity and category, trend lines showing improvement or regression, and detailed drill-downs for individual resources. Export reports in PDF format for audit documentation and stakeholder presentations.
