About the Project

AI Security Guardrails implements multiple layers of protection for applications that use artificial intelligence, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT, Claude, and open-source alternatives. As organizations rapidly integrate AI into their products and workflows, new categories of security vulnerabilities have emerged that traditional security tools cannot address. This framework provides a middleware layer that sits between your application and the AI model, intercepting and analyzing both inputs (prompts) and outputs (responses). It includes several detection and prevention modules: Prompt Injection Detection identifies attempts to manipulate AI behavior through crafted inputs, including direct injection ('ignore previous instructions'), indirect injection (hidden instructions in documents or web pages), and jailbreaking attempts. PII Leakage Prevention scans AI outputs for personally identifiable information (names, emails, SSNs, credit card numbers) that the model might inadvertently expose from its training data. Output Validation ensures AI responses conform to expected formats, lengths, and content policies. Rate Limiting with intelligent throttling prevents abuse while accommodating legitimate burst usage patterns. Adversarial Usage Monitoring tracks and flags patterns of interaction that suggest systematic probing or manipulation of the AI system. All security events are logged with full context for forensic analysis, and the framework provides real-time dashboards showing threat metrics, blocked requests, and usage anomalies. Configuration is done through a single YAML file where security policies can be defined declaratively.

Why This Matters

The integration of AI, especially LLMs, into business applications represents both a tremendous opportunity and a significant new attack surface. Prompt injection has been called 'the SQL injection of the AI era' — a fundamentally new vulnerability class that allows attackers to manipulate AI systems into performing unintended actions, leaking sensitive data, or generating harmful content. Unlike traditional software vulnerabilities that have well-established mitigation patterns, AI security is a rapidly evolving field where new attack techniques are discovered weekly. Organizations deploying AI applications face risks including data exfiltration through carefully crafted prompts, reputational damage from AI-generated inappropriate content, compliance violations from uncontrolled data processing, and financial losses from AI-powered fraud or manipulation. This project provides practical, immediately deployable protections that give organizations a security foundation while the broader AI security field matures. It is designed to be defense-in-depth — no single guardrail is perfect, but the combination of multiple overlapping protections significantly raises the bar for attackers.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Install the AI Security Guardrails package as a middleware in your AI application. For Python/FastAPI applications, run 'pip install ai-security-guardrails' and add the middleware to your application initialization. For other frameworks, use the REST API proxy mode which works with any language.
  2. Configure your security policies in the guardrails.config.yaml file. Define which detection modules to enable, set sensitivity thresholds for each module, specify actions for different threat levels (block, warn, log), and configure notification channels. Start with the 'balanced' preset which provides good protection without excessive false positives.
  3. Activate the specific detection modules your application needs. Enable 'prompt-injection' for any user-facing AI feature, 'pii-detection' if the AI processes personal data, 'output-validation' to enforce response format and content policies, and 'rate-limiting' to prevent automated abuse. Each module can be fine-tuned independently.
  4. Monitor the security dashboards to understand your AI application's threat profile. The dashboard shows real-time metrics on blocked threats, detection accuracy, usage patterns, and system performance impact. Use the weekly digest reports to brief stakeholders on AI security posture and emerging threat trends.
